It opens with the controversy over religious images, the temporal power of the popes and the coronation of Charlemagne, then gives a long account of Arabia, the life of Muhammad and the rapid Arab conquests of Persia, Syria, Egypt, Africa and Spain. Gibbon goes on to the Byzantine Empire in the tenth century, the Paulician sect, the Bulgarians, Hungarians and Russians, the Normans in southern Italy and the rise of the Turks, and closes with the First Crusade.
