This sixth and final volume of Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire contains chapters LIX to LXXI. It follows the later Crusades, Saladin's conquest of Jerusalem and the Fourth Crusade, which ended in the Latin capture of Constantinople, then the Greek emperors of Nicaea and their recovery of the city. Gibbon traces the Mongols, the rise of the Ottoman Turks and Timur, the attempts to unite the Greek and Latin churches, and the fall of Constantinople to Mehmed II in 1453. The last chapters return to medieval Rome and end with a view of its ruins in the fifteenth century.
