上總國上野郡に田地二十石ばかりを耕す、源五右衞と云ふ百姓の次男で、小助と云ふのがあつた。兄の元太郎は至極實體で、農業に出精し、兩親へ孝行を盡し、貧しい中にもよく齊眉き、人づきあひは義理堅くて、村の譽ものなのであるが、其の次男の小助は生れついたのらくらもの。晝間は納屋の中、鎭守の森、日蔭ばかりをうろつく奴、夜遊びは申すまでもなし。色が白いのを大事がつて、田圃を通るにも編笠でしよなりと遣る。炎天の田の草取などは思ひも寄らない。 兩親や兄の意見などは、蘆を吹く風ほども身に染みないで、朋輩同士には、何事にも、直きに其の、己が己ががついてつて、あゝ、世が世ならばな、と口癖のやうに云ふ。尤も先祖は武家出であらうが、如何にも件の、世が世ならばが、友だちの耳に觸つて聞苦しい。自然につきあつて遊ぶものも少なくなる。對手もなければ小遣もなく、まさか小盜賊をするほどに、當人氣位が高いから身を棄てられず。内にのら/\として居れば、兩親は固より、如何に人が好いわ、と云つて兄じや人の手前、据膳を突出して、小楊枝で奧齒の加穀飯をせゝつては居られぬ處から、色ツぽく胸を壓へて、こゝがなどと痛がつて、溜息つく/″\と鬱い
