(封書――。宛名、神奈川県足柄上郡R――村字鬼塚タバン・アウエルバツハ気付、御常連殿) 僕は東京の生活が物珍らしく、愉快で愉快でマメイドのことなんて思ひ出す余裕もなかつたよ。それで、君達が何んなに憤慨し、何んなに烈しく亢奮して夜毎に僕を罵倒してゐるであらうか! といふことは、時々僕のデイライト・スクリーンに、まざまざと写り出るのであるが、そんな光景もさつぱり怖ろしくないのだ。ミス・マメイド(居酒屋の娘)が二三日前に手紙を寄して、僕が其処を去つてから既に百日になる……といふやうなことを云つてゐたが、なるほど考へて見ると僕がほんの四五日のつもりで其処を出発したのは、たしか三日のはじめだつたな、青野の裏庭の桃が蕾をもつてゐたことを覚えてゐる。そして僕の妻が、その桃の蕾を冬帽子のリボンにさしたゞらう。あの晩東京に着いて、何処に落着かうかと思ひながら銀座裏の酒場に立寄つて、君達にハガキを書いたりしてゐると、其処のとても綺麗な酌女が、その花を認めて、いろ/\な質問をするので、僕が今日までゐた村のこれこれの家の裏庭には、これ/\の桃林があつて、間もなく満開に至るであらう、さうすると村の人達は其処に集
