미야자와 겐지의 『첼로 켜는 고슈』는, 악단에서 가장 서툰 첼로 연주자가 음악회를 앞두고 밤마다 찾아오는 짐승들과 마주하는 이야기다. 고양이와 뻐꾸기, 너구리와 들쥐가 차례로 문을 두드리고 고슈는 성을 내면서도 그들을 상대해 준다. 짐승들이 원한 것은 저마다 달랐지만, 그 밤들을 지나며 그의 연주는 어느새 달라져 있었다. 겐지 생전에는 발표되지 못하고 1934년 세상을 떠난 뒤에 나왔다.

He worked as an agricultural teacher in the impoverished northeast and wrote almost entirely for himself, publishing only two books in his lifetime. Night on the Galactic Railroad, The Restaurant of Many Orders and his poetry were recognised after his death and are now read across Japan.

セロ弾きのゴーシュ 宮沢賢治 ゴーシュは町の活動写真館でセロを弾く係りでした。けれどもあんまり上手でないという評判でした。上手でないどころではなく実は仲間の楽手のなかではいちばん下手でしたから、いつでも楽長にいじめられるのでした。 ひるすぎみんなは楽屋に円くならんで今度の町の音楽会へ出す第六交響曲の練習をしていました。 トランペットは一生けん命歌っています。 ヴァイオリンも二いろ風のように鳴っています。 クラリネットもボーボーとそれに手伝っています。 ゴーシュも口をりんと結んで眼を皿のようにして楽譜を見つめながらもう一心に弾いています。 にわかにぱたっと楽長が両手を鳴らしました。みんなぴたりと曲をやめてしんとしました。楽長がどなりました。 「セロがおくれた。トォテテ テテテイ、ここからやり直し。はいっ。」 みんなは今の所の少し前の所からやり直しました。ゴーシュは顔をまっ赤にして額に汗を出しながらやっといま云われたところを通りました。ほっと安心しながら、つづけて弾いていますと楽長がまた手をぱっと拍ちました。 「セロっ。糸が合わない。困るなあ。ぼくはきみにドレミファを教えてまでいるひまはな
