『徳論の形而上学的原理』（The Metaphysical Elements of Ethics）は、カント『人倫の形而上学』（1797年）の第2部「徳論」の冒頭部分を、トマス・キングズミル・アボットが英訳したものである。個々の義務を詳しく論じた本論ではなく、序文と長い序論のみを収める。カントは倫理学が法とどう異なるかを説明し、同時に義務でもある目的、すなわち自己の完全性と他人の幸福という考えを導入して、徳の義務、道徳的感情、良心、他人への愛、尊敬、自制を論じる。最後に、内なる法廷としての良心をめぐる短い一節が置かれる。

If there exists on any subject a philosophy (that is, a system of rational knowledge based on concepts), then there must also be for this philosophy a system of pure rational concepts, independent of any condition of intuition, in other words, a metaphysic.
